Argus II artificial retina tests. Blind user carrying out tests for the Argus II retinal implant. Developed by US company Second Sight, this device consists of a 60-electrode array implanted in the retina. Images from a camera mounted on the glasses pass to a video processing unit, to an antenna, and then to the implant which stimulates the retina to provide some vision. Users of this implant can perceive contrasts between light and dark areas. Here, only the largest letters can be seen. Photographed at the Institut de la Vision, in Paris, France. Argus II was approved for sale in Europe in 2011.
