The samples of all species of the rosette form, and the earliest collections of grasses and grasslike plants, were washed in several changes of water to remove surficial soil particles and other foreign materials. Prior to the adoption of this procedure, analyses were made of washed and of care- fully wiped but unwashed samples, and these analyses revealed that washing did not influence the chemical composition of the succulent ma-.
