Was a mem-ber of the Massachusetts Militia, called forservice, April 15, 1861, Company F, SixthRegiment Passed through Balti-more, April 19, 1861, on the w-ay to guardthe Capitol at Washington, D. C. Mus-tered out, August 2, 1861. Re-enlisted asSergeant in Company F, Twentv-SixthMassachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Septem-ber 20, 1861, and later appointed ColorSergeant of same Regiment. Served inthe Department of the Gulf under GeneralButler, was transferred from there to theJames River in front of Richmond andfrom there to the Shenandoah Valley withGeneral Sheridan. EnlistedApril 16, 1861, from Lowell, Mass., toserve three months, and was mustered inApril 22, 1861, Company A, Sixth Regi-ment, Masssachusetts Volunteer Infantry,on Boston Common, Colonel Edward commanding. Discharged Augtist2, 1861, at Boston, Mass. Re-enlistedAugust 28, 1861, to serve three years in theFirst Battery Massachusetts Volunteers,Ivight Artillery, Captain Josiah Portercommanding. Discharged at Brandy Sta-tion, January 2, 1864. He was insixt3--one battles and a number of skir-mishes. Two horses
