When grown for a market crop, sow in single rows, 1 inch apart and 2 to 3 inches deep, the rows from 2 to 4 feet apart, accord- ing to the variety. Begin sowing the extra-early varie- ties as soon as the ground can be worked in March ; con- tinue for a succession every 2 weeks until June, then dis- continue until the middle of August, when a good crop may be secured by sowing the extra early sorts for fall use. They should be kept clean, and earthed up twice during growth. The wrinkled varieties are not as hardy as the smooth sorts, and if planted early should have a dry soil, as they are liable to rot in the ground ; they are, how- ever, the sweetest and best flavored varieties.
