Doctor using a Reflotron electronic blood cholesterol measurement device, displaying a high value of 235 mg of cholesterol per decilitre of blood. This device provides a virtually instantaneous analysis of blood cholesterol. Blood is taken from a finger prick & smeared onto a test tab (similar to that used for testing blood sugar levels). The tab is inserted into the machine & a value subsequently appears on the display. The amount of saturated (mostly animal-derived) fats in the diet is the main influence of blood cholesterol levels. High values are implicated in coronary heart disease & obesity & demand reduction by dietary changes. The Oxford Textbook of Medicine (Biochemical Data Appendix) cites range of 150-300 mg/dl, with 228 mg/dl as upper desirable value.
