Dinner for Commander Perry, 1910

Dinner for Commander Robert E. Peary, March 5, 1910. Robert Edwin Peary, Sr. (May 6, 1856 - February 20, 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have led the first expedition, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole. Hotel Astor was located in the Times Square area of Manhattan, in operation from 1904-67. Within its restrained exterior, the Astor featured a long list of elaborately themed ballrooms and exotic restaurants. The rooftop garden, with bandstand and observatory, was one of a number constructed in the city between 1880 and Prohibition. The Large Ballroom, on the 9th floor, was decorated in the Rococo style of Louis XV and featured a high-groined arch ceiling in ivory white and old gold, supported by grouped caryatids. A gallery spanned the south and west sides, affording a fine view of the room, which could accommodate 500 diners. Hotel Astor was closed and demolished in 1967. Photographed by George R. Lawrence Company, 1910.
