Successful farming : a ready reference on all phases of agriculture for farmers of the United States and Canada . iththe minimum Ma-chinery. — Theplow takes firstrank in tillage im-plements. It isestimated thatmore power isrequired to plowthe fields of NorthAmerica than isused in all the fac-tories. While theplow is a very old implement, the steel plow, the sulky plow and the disk plow are implementsof recent development. These are modified in form and construction toadapt them to different kinds of soil and the power available for doing thework. The mold-board plow is most universally used. It should be highlypolished and kept reasonably sharp in order to perform its work with theminimum power. Rolling coulters, standing coulters and jointers areattached to more completely cover trash, prevent clogging or reduce thedraft. Disk plows are adapted to a dry soil and to land heavily covered withvegetation. They have been recently modified so that one disk followsthe other in such a way that it increases the depth of plowing to 12 or 14inches and mixes the subsoil with the surface One Type of Sulky 1 Courtesy of The Janesville Machine Company, Janesville, Wis.
