St Mary-le-Strand, nave to east; by James Gibbs 1714-1717.
St Mary-le-Strand. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches', built by James Gibbs 1714-1717 in the English Baroque style. The interior looking east. 'To keep out noises from the street', Gibbs kept the lower storey windowless on the north and south walls. The plasterwork in the nave is attributed to Wilkins: the ornate coffered ceiling is a tightly packed expanse of squares, triangles and lozenges. In 1718 the expense of the decoration so alarmed the Commisioners that they demanded a 'stop should be put to the extravagt. Carvings within'.
