Former location of the shrine of popular saint Master John Schorne at the E end of the S aisle of North Marston Church, Buckinghamshire, England, UK.

Site of the shrine of John Schorne at the E end of the S aisle of North Marston Church, Buckinghamshire, England, UK. The low recess decorated with a cinquefoil arch & fleurons probably held the bones of Sir John who was Rector of North marston 1290-1314. He was revered as a popular saint because of the miraculous cures of fevers & gout brought about at his well in the village which he discovered (by dowsing) during a drought. Miracles were also worked at his elaborate shrine which became one of the most popular places of pigrimage in England, visited twice by Henry VIII. So popular that it & the relics were removed to St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, in 1478 & Edward IV built a new chancel at North Marston to ease his conscience & quieten the angry villagers. The moulded sill course with flower-like decorations (fleurons) indicate an important location within the church. John Schorne was also famous for conjuring the Devil into a boot: an early form of jack-in-the-box used to entertain his congregation. He was a target for C16th reformers who considered him a superstitious semi-saint & disapproved of his cures for gout, a condition caused by excessive consumption.
