A circa 1940's photograph of powdered beryllium ore being baked into bricks at Reading, Pennsylvania. Though beryllium was discovered in the late 18th century, its commercial value and distinct properties were not generally utilised until the 1920s. Its dust is toxic, despite no apparent health and safety measures being in place at the time this picture was taken.
