Robert Fulton (1765-1815), US engineer. Fulton's early career was as an artist in England, but he left for France in 1797 to pursue his interests in engineering. He designed the 'Nautilus', the world's first practical submarine (launched 1800). He also worked on using steam engines (a new technology) in boats, designing a steamboat that steamed along the Seine in August 1803. Fulton returned to the USA in 1806, where he designed a paddle steamer (later called the 'Clermont'). This launched in 1807 on the Hudson River, New York, the world's first commercial steamboat service. He also designed the first steam-powered warship. This French artwork dates from the early 20th century.
