The Class R-1 locomotives exert atractive force of 72,800 lbs., and burn amixture of fine anthracite and soft boilers are similar in many respectsto those of Class K-S, except that they arelonger and the fireboxes are considerablywider. The combustion chamber is 60 , and the tube length is 21 ft. Thegrate area is 100 sq. ft., and in considera-tion of the large size of the firebox it isinteresting to note that the seams are. \ss — (jo. FOR THE LEHIGH V.^ H. C. May, Supt. Motr Loco. Works, Builders. The Pacific type locomotives were spe-cially designed to handle fast freighttrains weighing about 2,0(K)-2,4(X) tons onthe low grade sections of the line, but theyare also fitted for heavy express passen-ger traffic, and are being used for suchwork on the Wyoming Division, wheregrades are heavy. In this respect theymay be compared to the Class J-55 Ten-wheeled locomotives which, for someyears, have been doing exceptionallygood work on this road. The Pacifiesare among the most powerful of theirtype, exerting a tractive force of 48,700lbs., or 55 per cent., in excess of the trac-tive force of Class J-55. They are spe-cially designed for burning bituminouscoal, and differ in this respect from thegreater part of the motive power on theLehigh Valley. The boilers of Class N-3, K-5, and R-1,a
