. Atlas of the rare vascular plants of Ontario. Rare plants; Botany. Atlas of the Rare Vascular Plants of Ontario/Atlas des plantes vasculaires rares de l'Ontario CARYOPHYLLACEAE Paronychia fastlglata (Rat.) Fern. {Anychia fastigiata Rat., A. polygonoides Raf.) Hairy forked chickweed, whitlow-wort Paronychie. HABITAT: Clay or clay loam soil in clearings and openings of nnixed deciduous woodlands. STATUS: Rare in Canada. Rare in fvlinnesota and Delaware. NOTES: The continued persistence of Paronychia fastigiata near Canborough in the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk was confirmed in 1985. The occurrence of other rare species in this woodland, such as Carex glaucodea Tuckerman ex OIney, C. seorsa Howe, C. willdenowii Schkuhr ex Willd., and Danttionia compressa Austin ex Peck, all with similar southeastern or Appalachian affinities, suggests that P. fastigiata is native at this locality, rather than adventive as suggested by Cody (1970). In Quebec it has been reported as a casual introduction in the railroad yards at Val Royal (Rousseau 1968). REFERENCES / SOURCES Cody, 197
