View from beach of La Conche, lighthouse "les Baleinaux", Ile de Ré (Saint-Clément des Baleines, Charentes Maritimes, France).

Whale Lighthouse is located at the western tip of the Ile de Ré (Charente-Maritime), in the commune of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines. The lighthouse is named, the fact that a relatively large number of whales came ashore here on the island of Ré in the past. The lighthouse was built in 1849, on plans by architect Leonce Reynaud, to replace the old lighthouse at 29 feet, built in 1682 on the directives of Vauban and still exists north of the lighthouse. The commissioning took place in 1854. The lighthouse is 57 meters high and access to the top is via a spiral staircase of 257 steps. It is doubled in width (north west) on a rocky bank, the "High Banks of the North", a small lighthouse, the lighthouse calves.
