In many parts of Asia Betel leaves are chewed in combination with areca nuts, the two forming a Betel Quid. Betel quids act as a mild stimulant. The bright red juice stains teeth and gums. Betel is a spice, the leaves have medical properties. The quids are used to treat headaches, arthritis and joint pain and constipation. They also used as an aphrodisiac.
