Solar furnace experiment. Researcher holding an object (glowing) at the focal point of a solar furnace to demonstrate its power. This is the Mont-Louis solar furnace in France. The world's first solar furnace, it was built in 1949 as an experimental site. A flat mirror directs sunlight towards a parabolic mirror array (neither seen). This focuses the sunlight onto the area shown, achieving concentrated energy and high temperatures. This can be used in the form of thermal power, or directly to heat objects (as here). This solar furnace was the precursor of the larger one at Odeillo, opened in 1970. Photographed in 2012.
