Ardfert Cathedral, a ruined cathedral, near Tralee, County Kerry, Munster Province, in the Republic of Ireland.


Ardfert Cathedral ( dedicated to St Brendan, the Navigator ) is a ruined cathedral in Ardfert, near the city of Tralee, County Kerry, Munster Province, in the Republic of Ireland. In the 6th century, St. Brendan, the Navigator founded a monastery at this site near Tralee in County Kerry. It was the seat of the Diocese of Ardfert from 1117. It is now a heritage tourism site. Ardfert Cathedral was constructed in the 11-12th century.  The cathedral is decorated with some delicate Romanesque designs along the doorways, windows and choir column capitals. The left wall from the 11th century was completed without windows whereas the right wall contains nine tall lancet windows. Crenelation, the squared edge wall was added along the roof line in the 15th century to form a battlement.
