Kneeling in prayer: male and female donors of a vivid 16th century Renaissance stained glass window of scenes from Christ's Resurrection, installed in 1512 in the church of St Remy at Ceffonds in France's Champagne region. It was made by the master glassmakers of Troyes, the historic regional capital, renowned for producing glass in intense blues, striking reds, vibrant greens and bold yellows.
Ceffonds, Haute-Marne, Grand Est, France: the donors of a vivid 16th century Renaissance stained glass window depicting scenes from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ kneel in prayer, on a green field in front of saints and a red background, in the village church at Ceffonds in the Champagne region of northeast France. The window was installed in the Église Saint-Rémi de Ceffonds in 1512, during rebuilding work that lasted from 1510 to 1524. It is one of several in the church made by master glass artists at Troyes, historic capital of Champagne, and known as Troyenne glass, which was renowned for its intense blues, striking reds, vivid emerald greens and vibrant chrome yellows. The Ceffonds windows are also typical examples of Champenoise School stained glass, made both at Troyes and elsewhere in Champagne. Troyenne glass survives in many churches in the river valleys of the Aube, Marne, Upper Marne and Yonne. Apart from vibrant colours, it often includes small narrative scenes and halos with beaded decoration.
