Allthese courses are on the same plane ; and probably anotherrim of the arch is concealed by the w^alling which has beenfilled in underneath.^ Going on from the Piazza San Pietro, and passing underan archway, we came upon the Castello di Corte, also a partof the ancient palace of the Gonzaga family, who were for along time lords of Mantua. It is certainly a very remarkablepiece of mediaeval fortification, but its efiect is much damagedby the
