ON RETRO-PERITONEAL HERNIA CHAPTER I. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTESTINAL CANAL AND PERITONEUM. The intestinal canal, at the beginning of the fourth week ofintra-uterine life, consists of an almost straight tube, attachedthroughout its whole length by a dorsal or posterior fold ofperitoneum to the middle line of the body (Fig. i). Thisfold is the primitive mesentery. In that portion of the canalwhich afterwards develops into the stomach is seen a dorsalbulging, which represents the greater curvature of that is to this curvature, therefore, that the primitive mesenteryis attached. From the anterior (or ventral) portion of thestomach, and the beginning of the duodenum, asecond foldof peritoneum runs forward to be fixed into the anteriorabdominal wall.
