The firstyear he bought a lot onGeorge street of a Hopkins, who a good deal of land nowj belonging to the house stood wherethe west part of Rhode Island Hall now stands, on the east part. A narrow lane ran between thetwo houses until it lost itself at the turnstile leading onto the front campus. Mr. Cadys garden extended up tothe site of Slater Hall. The first thing I remember about college affairs was theburning of the essays by the students when I was aboutseven years old. It was probably at the end of the springterm of 1831. Commencement was then the first Wed-nesday in September. One morning I noticed two tallpoles standing on the east side of Hope College withbundles of white paper tied on them. Soon I heardmusic, and running up the garden promptly climbed thefence to investigate. A procession of students, dressedin fantastic costumes, came around University Hall,
