Cape sugarbird (Promerops cafer) perching on a protea flower. This small bird mostly feeds on nectar from flowers, such as this protea flower. Its long, narrow bill is used to reach the nectar, which is produced by plants to attract pollinating insects. The Cape sugarbird is found only in the fynbos regions of South Africa, areas that have a diverse range of flowers and other plants. A sugarbird may visit 300 protea flowers every day to find enough nectar. It has an extremely long tail that can be several times its body length. Photographed in Betty's Bay, South Africa.
