Eye after treatment for glaucoma. Close-up of the eye of an 81-year-old male patient taken one week after a trabeculectomy for glaucoma. Glaucoma is an increase in pressure within the eye, usually resulting from a defect in the drainage of the aqueous humour. This may be due to infection, trauma or other causes. Trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure used to relieve the pressure by removing part of the eye's trabecular meshwork, the tissue responsible for draining the aqueous humor. This allows the aqueous humor to drain more efficiently.
