Beijing, China - 17 October 2006; one old woman in view. At the heart of Beijing lies the The Forbidden City - the Imperial Palace and seat of the Emperor from the Ming to the end of the Qing dynasty, over five centuries which finally ended in 1912. It is a magnificent site, but usually crowded with tourists. But there are still quiet spots and stunning vistas to be found, if you look hard enough. Here we see a tranquil scene - an old woman resting on a bench - in the Imperial Gardens, a place of retreat from ruling what was then - and remains now - the most populous country on earth.
