BARBARY LION (Panthera leo leo) The Barbary or Atlas lion is the largest subspecies of lion. A male can be over 3 meters in length and weigh more that 250kgs. The lioness gives birth to between 1 and 6 cubs after a gestation period of 110 days. It was these lions that the Roman Emperors used as opponents for the gladiators or to feed the Christians to! In the wild Barbary lions preyed on Barbary deer and wild boar. These lions are extinct in the wild. They used to roam the Atlas mountain range of Tunisia, Algeria and morocco. The last wild lion was shot in 1922. Some lions were kept in the King of Morocco's private zoo and these lions are descended from these.
