Gifted with a fluent and ready oratory, he soqnappeared in the political hustings, and, being apassionate admirer of the great Whig leader of theWest. Henry Clay, he joined his political fortunes tohe party of his idol. In 1840 he engaged with greatrdor in the exciting hard cider campaign fortiarrison.
