Prevotella dentalis. Computer manipulation of a transmission electron micrograph (TEM), showing cells of the tooth decay-causing bacteria, Prevotella dentalis (formerly Mitsuokella dentalis). These cells were isolated from dental root canals. They are gram negative rod-shaped bacteria. The surface of each cell is covered with numerous short & thick protuberances called pili, which play a role in bacterial reproduction. Magnification: x12,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
