Cabman's shelter

Cabmen's shelters were set up by the Earl of Shaftsbury who headed up a charity, founded in 1874, called the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund. Since cabbies were traditionally not allowed to leave or move far from their vehicles when parked, the shelters were there to provide them with wholesome food at reasonable prices. Those that have survived today are still used by taxi drivers. Some shelters also sell food and drink to the passing public, although only cabbies are allowed inside.
