The elections went againstihe Republicans. Many bitter opponents of the war wereelected to office and they made the mistake of believingthat every man who voted for them endorsed their opposi-tion, and their violent language against the Government,and thus they were led into greater extremes. The nextelection, and those which followed for several years, dem-onstrated how greatly they had mistaken the publicfeeling. The Legislature of 1863 was a turbulent body and partyfeeling ran high.
