This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Ozone distribution, satellite map, released 1st December 2017. One of the first images from the Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission shows how ozone is distributed around the world. While ozone in the stratosphere protects us from the Sun's ultraviolet radiation, lower down in the atmosphere it is a harmful pollutant. Ground level ozone is created by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight. Image acquired by the Sentinel-5P satellite, the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring air pollution. Sentinel-5P was launched on 13 October 2017.
