Scenes following closure of the Market Harborough to Northampton line in 1973.

Scenes following closure of the Market Harborough to Northampton line in 1973. This line was a last link in the main line workings of the ex-LNWR Super D 0-8-0s known as Weasers. During the 1950s seven of these engines were allocated to Leighton Buzzard for working sand trains from pits in the area — these classic heavy freight engines made a fine sight as they traversed the scenic section between Northampton and Market Harborough. The line was opened in 1859 with eight stations and two tunnels and the one seen here is Oxendon, which is 462 yards long. The Northampton to Market Harborough line connected with the LNWR West Coast Main Line and the Midland Main Line at Market Harborough. Latter day passenger trains on the Market Harborough to Northampton line were sometimes powered by ex-LMS 2P 4-4-0s fitted with Dabeg water heaters.
