Peterchurch cast iron milepost
A traditional milepost of cast iron. It is typical of those found in the locality and was cast in a foundry in Hereford. With many coats of paint it is not possible to read the founders name, but the date is given as 1840. Such street furniture assisted the traveller. helping them to know how far they had travelled and how far they had yet to go. It also helped identify just where you where. The panel hidden from view gives the distance to Hay (long before it became Hay on Wye). It is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1887. Despite its size it is one of two in Peterchurch that have listed building status.
