This lovely home soon became the resort of the foremost literary and public men of A DUTCH HOrsEHOLP, AS KNlCKliRliOCKER. Irving was a most charm-ing host, and was nevermore in his element thanwhen surrounded by appreciative and responsive friends. In 1842, at the sug-gestion of Daniel Webster, he was appointed by President Tyler minister toSpain, where he spent four years, returning in 1846 to his beloved Sunnyside, where he lived until his death in November, 1859. WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT. 655 Irving was as quaint a figure, says George W. Curtis, as DiedrichKnickerbocker himself, . . tripping with elastic step along Broadway, withlow-quartered shoes, neatly tied, and a Talma cloak,—a short garment that hungfrom his shoulders like the cape of a coat. There was a chirping, cheery, old-school air in his appearance, which was undeniably Dutch, and most harmoniouswith the associations of his own writings. He seemed, indeed, to have steppedout of his own books ; and the cordial grace and humor of his address weredelightfully characteristic.
