Young Hindu girl having her hair shaved as a form of self sacrifice at a temple in Madurai to apease the goddess Mariamman India

In Tamil Nadu the goddess Mariamman ( a form of Kali ) is seen as the goddess of diseases which manifesters when she is angry and the beads of her sweat break out on the skin as chicken poxs ( or in former times small poxs). In this image there had been an outbreak of chicken poxs so children and adults went to the temple and gave their hair as a gift of self sacrifice to Kali before being blessed with sandalwood and pooja.
