Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Candida albicans (yeast) cells. C. albicans is a single-celled fungus that reproduces asexually, with daughter cells budding from parent cells. C. albicans is normally harmless and is commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth, digestive- and respiratory- tracts and the vagina. Antibiotic treatment or compromised immune function may, however, lead to C. albicans infection. Common candida infections include oral and vaginal thrush.
