This is a real situation. Image not to be used in a defamatory context. Shared care dialysis unit. Nurse helping a patient to connect himself to a dialysis machine at a shared care dialysis treatment unit. Kidney dialysis, or haemodialysis, is required when the kidneys are no longer able to filter waste products from the blood properly. A patient's blood is passed through a dialysis machine, or dialyser, which acts as an artificial kidney, removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood before returning the blood to the patient's body. The procedure takes several hours and needs to be repeated several times a week. This shared care unit it designed to teach patients how to put themselves on and off the dialysis machine so that they take more control of their treatment. Some will even progress to care at home. Early results show significant mental health benefits to the approach.
