International Space Station (ISS) in March 2011, partial view. At right is a docked Russian Soyuz spacecraft. At left is an array of solar panels. Across top is part of the ISS's Quest airlock. In the background is the glow of the Earth's limb and atmosphere, with the rest of the planet in darkness. The ISS has been under construction since 1998, and manned since 2000. It orbits the Earth at an altitude of several hundred kilometres. This photograph was taken on 1 March 2011, from the Space Shuttle Discovery while it was docked with the ISS during mission STS-133.
