'Archipel des Indes Orientales'. East Indies Philippines. DE VAUGONDY, 1750 map
Artist/engraver/cartographer: Robert de Vaugondy. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color and decorative title cartouche. The maps covers the East Indies including Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Celebes/Sulawesi, the lesser Sunda Islands and the Moluccas, the Philippines, part of New Guinea, The Malay peninsula and much of the east coast of Indochina, part of the north coast of Australia/New Holland. The Philippines are well represented, however undue prominence is given to the "Nouvelles Philippines" (New Philippines), a large group of islands shown as being directly south and east of the Philippines themselves; these are likely an inaccurate representation of a mislocated and oversized Caroline Islands. New Guinea is also inaccurately represented. Shown of the Paracel island is a small triangular (and apparently fictitious) island group marked as the "Cordon de S. Antoine ou les Lunettes" (St. Anthony’s chain or the spectacles).
