Britain's biggest folly was built over 40 years, beginning in 1870, by an eccentric vicar of Farringdon, mostly by his own hands. Massey's Folly is an impressive ornate 17 room red brick building with two industrial towers built by Thomas Hackett Massey. It stood empty for many years, then in 1925 the village started to use it as a village hall and school, and more recently as a day nursery and for evening classes. The building was granted grade II listed status but in 2004 it was placed on English Heritage's buildings at risk register as it had fallen into a state of neglect. The building featured on the BBC Restoration Village programme. It is planned to turn it into 5 homes.
