Light microscopy of a cross-sectioned nerve fibre containing myelinated nerves. Each irregular circle is a central axon surrounded by a dark-stained myelin sheath. Many axons are accompanied by a nucleus and cytoplasm of a Schwann cell which produces the myelin sheath. The whole nerve is contained within and supported by investing layers of connective tissue. Magnification x400 when printed at 10 cm.
