Knee joint, light micrograph of a section of part of the knee joint. Articular cartilage covers the surface of the bone that contacts the neighbouring bone. The bone is spony with caracteristic trabeculae and bone marrow spaces. Synovial membrane, which lines and lubricates the joint, is seen top right. In osteoarthritis this cartilage becomes worn and rough causing inflammation and pain and may lead to the need for surgical knee replacement. Magnification: X 60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
