A Tanuki (Japanese Racoon Dog) in the wild, Hokkaido
The Tanuki or Japanese Racoon Dog is often mistaken for a badger or racoon, but is in fact completely unrelated to either. They are mammals which are native only to Japan and are often found in Japanese folklore. Being shy animals, they are not often seen in the wild.
