The financial pressures on Britain’s families means parents are struggling to cope with looking their children because they both need to work. It leaves grandparents stepping in to help out with everyday jobs, from childcare to cooking family meals, saving parents £33 billion every year. Charities warned that without their assistance, more families would find it difficult to survive. The grandparents surveyed in the study by insurer Aviva cared for two grandchildren for 13 hours a week on average and were not paid. It is the equivalent of a £2,400 saving a year per child. Separate research from the insurer shows that the cost of raising a child to the age of 21 is more than £270,000. But this can be reduced significantly with grandparents doing a large proportion of the childcare. The study showed 28 per cent regularly do the school run and 26 per cent cook occasional meals for the family. A third of grandparents help their grandchildren with hobbies and 15 per cent help out financially with occasional household bills.
