Sea ice sand expanse towards sand-winning vehicles and white sun sinking yellow sky, beach north of St Annes, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. View across low tide sand expanse with sea ice towards sand-winning digger and tractor wagon, and a white sun sinking through a yellow sky, on the beach north of St Annes. Coimmercial sand extraction, on the beach north of St Annes, was given planning permission in 1989. The permissiom expires in 2049. During 2013 an estimated mean 300 cubic metres of sand were extracted each day, adding up to a total 78,000 cubic metres a year. The sand is taken to the beach top, tipped and taken away by other wagons.
