In animals this blood coagulum isnot always seen, but it is practically constant in the human corpus luteum. Around the central blood-mass is the wrinkled yellow membrane whichcharacterizes the corpus luteum by its unique color. There has been somequestion as to the origin of the cells that make up the yellow membrane, but itis now generally accepted that they represent the hypertrophied epithelialcells of the membrana granulosa.
