Amyloidosis, LM

Amyloidosis. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through a human liver tissue with amyloidosis. This is a rare disease that occurs when an abnormal protein called amyloid (red), builds up in the organs and interferes with their normal function. Other organs that may be affected include the heart, kidneys, spleen, nervous system and digestive tract. Amyloid isn't normally found in the body, but can be formed from several different types of protein. Large numbers of inflammatory cells surround the amyloid deposits. Magnification: 80 when printed 10cm wide. Human tissue.
