Marsh Thistle / Cirsium palustre - winter leaf rosette. Possible metaphor for pain / painful / sharp.

As the name suggests, Marsh Thistle (Cirsium palustre) is a plant species that inhabits damp and moist ground, although it does not grow 'in' water. It is found across much of northern temperate Europe. In the winter and early spring the plant has an array of leaves in a ground-hugging rosette form, as shown.
