SS ANDREA DORIA - SS STOCKHOLM Collision. A view from port side of the great hulk of the 656-ft. Italian passenger liner SS ANDREA DORIA sinking in sharp list to starboard after colliding with the Swedish liner SS STOCKHOLM in fog about 205 miles east of New York, 55 miles south of Nantucket Island, on July 25, 1956. The ANDREA DORIA carried 1,000 passengers and 500 crew members. Participants in the rescue included the SS CAPE ANN, SS ILE de FRANCE, Coast Guard cutters, seaplanes, and helicopters, and Air Force helicopters.
