Deadvlei, NAMBIA - JANUARY (3): The sun rises over Deadvlei, a clay pan known for its thousand year old preserved dead forest

The thousand year old dead trees cast long shadows across the clay pan, Deadvlei, as the sun rises in the Namib Naukluft Park, Namibia. The dead trees are preserved by the extreme dry climate and intense heat that prevent bacterial growth. The seasonal shift in prevailing winds prevent the sand dunes from slowly marching across the pan and burying the trees.
