. A treatise on obstetrics for students and practitioners . layer, the innerlayer adhering to the ovum. The fissure generally enlarges andbecomes filled with a fluid known as the liquor folliculi. With theformation of this fissure and the secretion of its serous fluid theprimary follicle becomes a Graafian follicle. The ovum covered with the inner layer of its original envelopeattaches itself to that side of the Graafian follicle nearest the centre ofthe ovary, forming a mass of cells referred to as the discus proligerus. Coincidently with these changes there has been formed a delicatemembrane immediately about the ovum, known as the zona radiataor zona pellucida; while to the wall of the follicle (the membranagranulosa) there has been added a very delicate basement-membrane,the membrana propria of Waldeyer. Later on the cdls of the discusproligerus become radiately arranged about the zone and constitute thecorona radiata. The Graafian follicle grows much more than the ovum and becomescystic, owing to the accumulation of the liquor (I So Ei Mp K Development of Graafian follicle. (Wiedersheim.)KE. The cells of the vascular ovarian stroma become modified into twodisrinct vascular layers immediately about the Graafian follicle. Theselayers may be distinguished about a mature follicle as an inner tunicapropria, carrying the smaller bloodvessels, and an outer tunica fibrosa, carrying the coarser vessels. The vascular supply of the Graafianfollicle has a most peculiar arrangement : the smaller vessels ascendingfrom the base of the follicle become much subdivided and form a 56 PREGNANCY AND LABOR. mi
